SHOREHAM HOUSE
STATUS: COMPLETED 2023
LOCATION: SHOREHAM
The original beach shack, on the 1.1 acre site, was built by the current owner's father & completed in 1954 . This place has been cherished by generations of the large family but the time had come to restore, upgrade and extend the old shack to create a modern yet modest home, without losing the character of 70 years of family life.
Cueing off the geometry and roof line of the existing house, we then cranked the plan for the new wing to optimise orientation. The existing house and new southern aspect is clad in rough sawn, aged, Silvertop Ash, board & Batten timber, maintaining a, highly textural, 'beach shack' aesthetic to the ocean side while allowing the viewer to be able to read the old and the new from the northern, street side which is clad in heavily charred timber that really sits well in the semi-bush setting.
High performance composite windows (aluminium outside/timber inside) from Miglas, set the foundation for the energy efficency upgrades which included; a complete thermal envelope throughout; hydronic heat pump; heat transfer lines that move surplus warm air, produced by the wood stove to bedrooms; all powered by a state of the art solar system that is off-grid ready.
The original interior of the Living room, dining and kitchen have been reinstated and the house looks and feels warm and familiar.
